BMI (a.k.a. Quetelet II index) stands for body mass index and is defined as a persons weight in kilograms divided by the square of their height in metres. Calculating BMI enable us to assess the amount of adipose tissue in a body.
| BMI = | weight [kg] |
| height2 [m2] |
The higher the BMI the higher the incidence of different ailments. Especially, it concerns such diseases as: hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, hiperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus type 2, sleep apnea, some kinds of cancer (colorectal cancer, breast cancer, endometrial cancer).
In cases such as:
- pregnancy
- sportsmen and well-build people
- growing children
- elderly people, when the precise measurement of height is not possible
BMI is not reliable source of the information about the risk of diseases.
